On Thursday, the UAE government adopted a decision to grant a government employee a sabbatical leave for a full year, during which he receives half of his salary, to enable its employees to establish and manage their own businesses, according to the official Emirates News Agency (WAM).

The government has set some conditions that must be met to grant the employee a "full-time" leave for self-employment, which has become one of the leaves entitled to a government employee, according to the agency.

Sabbatical leave regulations

The Emirati employee is granted an exceptional leave to establish or manage any of the private projects owned by him, or to participate with others in establishing an economic project.

The license is granted through the head of the federal entity or his authorized representative

The approval of the employer must be obtained

The necessary licenses for the economic project must be obtained from the competent authorities in the country

The leave is granted to the employee based on the availability of the approved conditions and controls and according to what the employer decides as required by its interest.

This "sabbatical leave" is the latest steps the UAE is taking to facilitate the business environment with the aim of aiding the growth of the business community. The UAE had previously announced the Entrepreneur Visa as part of the Golden Residency Program, which allows entrepreneurs and their families to obtain permanent residency and special benefits.

The UAE launched the "Hometown of Entrepreneurship" initiative to help entrepreneurs and small and medium-sized companies, and aims to establish 20 billion companies from the UAE over the next 10 years.
