Google Photos will activate the protected folder on all Android phones

Last June Google Photos introduced a tool exclusive only to the latest Pixel phone models, the Google mobile brand. The function in question was "Locked Folder", which allows the user to hide intimate or sensitive photos and videos from the main gallery and protect them with a password or face lock. Now, this tool will be available to all users who have a phone running Android 6 or later versions. Google did not give a specific date, but said in a tweet on Twitter that it would be "all year round".

To create one of these Google Photos protected folders, you must first go into the app's photo gallery. Upon entering, a tab with various options appears on the right side of the screen. One of them, with a tick icon, says "utilities".

Once the service is available to all users, from there you can create a protected folder and move the photos you want to hide to it. The user can choose to protect this folder with a password or, conversely, open it only by facial recognition.

This way, photos hosted in this folder will not be displayed when reviewing photos in the gallery. In this sense, it is a functionality very similar to that provided by WhatsApp to hide sensitive content.

The Pixel mobile camera offers the option to send captured images directly to this protected folder. In this sense, Google has not indicated whether the same will happen with the cameras of other Android phones, or whether users of these cameras will have to save these images manually.
