How to free up space in Gmail

When Gmail, Google's free email service, launched in 2004, it offered an unfathomable 1GB of storage, and it wasn't long before it fell short. And no matter that over time this mailbox capacity has been gradually increased to the current 15 GB, it will always be insufficient for many users and there will be those who will struggle trying to avoid running out of storage.

Also, those 15GB now need to be shared with Google Drive and Google Photos, making it increasingly difficult to get free space to receive and store emails, so it's helpful to know some of the following ways to free up space in Gmail. . In advance, it may be desirable to make a full copy of the Gmail account, so that after the account "cleanup" is complete, another backup can be made.

First of all, what you need to do is check the available space, something that can be easily verified from the desktop version, as it appears at the bottom left of the inbox. There is total space available and what is already occupied.

-Cleaning: From the side tab that indicates the different folders, Storage Management can be implemented, being able to delete the emails that remain in the Trash and those in the Spam folder, either individually or in bulk.

-Remove large attachments: from the search box, you can invoke the advanced search through the icon containing the adjustment bars. There you can search for large attachments, the ones that occupy the most, indicating the size from which all emails with attachments that exceed this size will appear, facilitating the removal process that saves more space.

- Delete old emails: From the same search box where the icon with the adjustment bars calls the advanced search, you can select a set of dates to discard long-standing emails that you no longer need to continue storing.

- Automatic deletion: the trash is emptied automatically 30 days after the email is deleted, but if necessary, the option "Empty trash now" can be selected manually.

Bulk selection - If a date range and file size can be specified, then obviously both criteria can be combined to select old emails with large attachments to get rid of emails that we can ignore.

Ignore subscription emails, newsletters, flyers ...: Once again, the advanced search box becomes your greatest ally. If the term "unsubscribe" is specified as the search criteria, the result will be all emails that periodically send an email with commercial offers to the mailbox. In addition to being able to eliminate all of them, you can go one by one canceling the respective subscriptions, thus avoiding receiving new shipments that must be eliminated later.

Buy Storage - This will be your last resort when needs exceed 15GB of free storage space provided by Google. The plans gradually increase the capacity and the price to pay per month, remembering that all this space is shared between Gmail, Google Drive and Google Photos.
