Facebook already has its own city Willow Village

South of San Francisco, there is a 240,000 square meter "small" town called Willow Village (Villa Sauce) where a project is underway to make it a completely self-sufficient city. The big difference with other cities is that it is a private villa since it is owned by the most famous social network in the world: Facebook, which is based nearby, in Menlo Park.

The intention of Facebook with Willow Village is to provide a place to live for more than 1,500 families of workers in the company founded by Mark Zuckerberg, so this new city is having the necessary infrastructure: more than 1,500 homes, a supermarket, pharmacy . , office buildings, conference centers, a hotel with 193 rooms and a public park.

But Facebook's initiative is not the only one in this regard. Other large technology companies, such as Alphabet (Google's parent company) are also developing something similar in the vicinity of Mountain View, their headquarters, having planned the construction of more than 20,000 homes in the area. For its part, Apple has its spectacular and ambitious Apple Park in the area, with an estimated cost of 5,000 million dollars.

These "private cities" can allow some employees of large technology companies to live in privileged environments, starting with the fact that in some cases housing can represent an additional part of their remuneration, that is, they would not pay rent or mortgages to live in these private cities. rather it would be included as part of the salary.

And it is that in a highly concentrated geographical area the headquarters of these three large companies meet that can compete for the same professional profiles, and to hire or retain them sometimes it is not enough only with salary offers or distribution packages because to go to work in another company doesn't even need to move house. This is related to the average period of tenure on the staff of a large technology company, which is around two years.

This makes it necessary to develop a strategy that leads to strengthening the employee's bond with the company through their integration into the community. And that's where the concept of a "private city" dedicated to nurturing a neighborhood of company employees comes in. When ties with the neighborhood are strengthened, an obstacle to job abandonment is added. In fact, Facebook has already offered bonuses of $ 10,000 to employees who maintain their domicile in a place close to the headquarters of the company.
